Understanding the Basics of Consumer, Financial and Personal Injury Law

3 Things To Do If Your Dog Is Accused Of Biting Someone

Every year, many people get bitten by dogs. There are also dogs that are accused of biting people even though they didn't. This is especially true for breeds that are considered vicious, like pit bulls, rottweilers, or German shepherd dogs. If you have one of these breeds or any kind of dog that has been accused of biting someone, what should you do?

Stay Calm

If you are in the immediate situation, the first thing that you need to do is to stay calm. No matter what happens, your dog is going to pick up on your anxiety and get anxious on their own. If you get loud or upset, that will cause your pet to get nervous. If someone is yelling and accusing your dog of biting, you may want to see if you can get them to calm down as well. If they won't calm down, try to get your dog out of the situation, especially if there is another animal right there. All that loudness and excitement is a recipe for a bite, even from the calmest, most well-behaved dog.

Gather Proof

You are going to want to have as much proof on your side as possible. Ask to take pictures of any and all wounds. If the person wants to know why you want the picture, tell them that it's for your insurance purposes and your own records. If the bite happened at another time, ask to see if there were pictures taken of it, and take pictures of any healing wounds. Another reason for doing this is that the bites in the pictures may be able to be compared to your dog's teeth to see if they look similar.

Find a Lawyer

You are going to want to talk to a lawyer who specializes in dog bites or animal law. The reason for this is that authorities may want to classify your dog as vicious or as incorrigible and confiscate, especially if any existing injury is on the more severe side, or the person says the attack was unprovoked. A lawyer can help you by coming up with resources that may able to prove that your dog didn't attack anyone.

Having a pet is a great responsibility. You love your pet, and you know that they would probably not ever bite anyone. However, someone may still say that your dog did bite them, and it's important to know what to do if that happens.
