Understanding the Basics of Consumer, Financial and Personal Injury Law

Found a Secret Account Your Spouse Puts In Money? Call a Lawyer Fast

When you are married and have joint accounts, it can be deceitful and hurtful to find out that your spouse has been hiding money in a separate account. If you aren't sure why they have been hiding money from you, or if you have had suspicions that they have been hiding secrets, you will want to talk with a divorce lawyer right away. You want to make sure that they aren't trying to hide money that they want to keep in a divorce. Here are some of the things that you need to provide for your consultation.

All Banking Account Information

You need to have statements from all of your bank accounts and all other financial information for the lawyer to comb through. This means:

  • Retirement accounts
  • IRAs
  • Investment property information
  • All portfolio information
  • Trust documents
  • Current assets

Once you have all that information, the lawyer will look to see if they can find where the money is coming out of or if the money is coming from a source that you don't know about. If you have the information of the newly found account, bring that as well.

Tax Documents

You need to have all the tax documents that have been filed since you became a married couple. This will show what your spouse has claimed that their income was and what was put into accounts. Your lawyer will contact their employer to verify if all of this information is correct.

Marital Contracts

If you signed any type of documents when you got married, like a prenuptial agreement, life insurance contract, will, or anything else, bring them all to your lawyer. They need to see if you signed something that could potentially protect your spouse from hiding money. If not, half of the money may legally be yours.

You don't want to leave it to chance when you are wondering where your spouse is getting the money for the second account, and you want to make sure they aren't using money that is also yours. If you have found proof of an account or money that you aren't aware of, and you think your spouse may be trying to leave you with money that isn't accounted for, beat them to the punch. Get a divorce law attorney so you can find out exactly what is happening with their finances and the account, and prepare for divorce if that is the path you want to take.
